Biohistory Journal, Spring, 2004
This is the final issue of this year, in which the basis of our considerations has been the emotion of Philos. This emotion is generated by carefully observing the living creatures that tick away. We thought we would consider life itself based on a real feeling of its extension to thought and art.
In Dialogue, the topic is nothing less than "What is life?" There is universality in the diversity of living creatures. That's right--grab this and you might find the tail of a living creature.
In Research, the topic is the environment. The relationship between living creatures and the environment is the very thing that has created diversity. The environment lies behind the question, "What is life?"
Dr. Kato deals with environments that cause the choice of peculiar manners of living. Dr. Yamagishi deals with the environment that first created life. Both of them observe the essence from a perspective detached from daily activities.
In Scientist Library, we profile Takashi Miyata, whose interests have shifted over time from mathematics to physics and then to biology. His consistent approach throughout is that the method of inquiry is of vital importance.
