The scale alignment

Under an optical microscope, the scale cells on the wings of the Papilio maackii are arranged in an orderly manner that resembles flower petals. The scale cells are inside the pupa. They are so orderly there is space taken on all four sides. This is the starting point for thinking of how the genome determined the cell arrangement.
