Bones and Form

A comparison of vertebrate skeletons also reveals these themes of diversity and universality, telling us much about evolution process. In this section, we view specimens—suna yatsume lamprey, zebrafish, African clawed frog, loggerhead turtle, chicken and rat—and examine the process by which skeletal structures emerge from a round, fertilized egg gradually take form. We learn much from this comparison—and come up with plenty of new questions.
